Change agents

  1. 1. Should one resist? Or 2. lead change from  a position of legitimate power? Or 3.  be a part of the status quo, the reaction, the uinterested, the dull  spirited, most concerned about materail fears and safety? 4. Or be among the rich and powerful who can change their stand at will.and will always appear to be sympathetic to the weak but provide institutional strength to the power structure. This is the gap which is  opening up now in India now. The expectations which drive the young and the hopeful are the key drivers of social change but such change faces oppostion at every stage. Neha Bora just now spoke of the courage and resistance to come on to the street when all else fails. But there is another kind of courage which has no cheering to support it, the person diplaying such courage must summon it from wihin but he has institutional power and he is  a part of the power elite, with status and prospects which will await him/her if he does not upset the apple cart, he/she has much to lose as he is alienating those who could protect/reward him. Only those among 2. can lead the change but they will not be on the streets and will be heading legitimate positions from where real change can happen. Their number will be very small as they are self motivated, do not need crowds. How many such a society produces will decide the pace of change. Without any false modersty, I was one such. Neha Bora's handicap is that she does not know what change she wants and can bring about. Merely to say 'remove corruption' is not enough. You need people like me to run the Govt departments well.  If she champions my example things can change but this is unlikely.
